What Are the Germany Opportunity Card Requirements?

The Germany Opportunity Card, also called the Chancenkarte, allows eligible non-EU nationals to enter Germany to search for qualified employment. Applicants can qualify through one of two routes.

01

Recognised Skilled Professional Route

You may qualify without the points system if your foreign vocational or academic qualification is fully recognised as equivalent in Germany.

  • Recognised academic degree or vocational qualification.
  • Proof of qualification recognition or comparability.
  • Sufficient financial resources for your stay.
  • Required health insurance.
For this route, a language certificate is not a formal Opportunity Card requirement. German language skills are still useful when applying for jobs.
02

Points-Based Route

If your qualification is not fully recognised in Germany, you may be able to apply through the points system.

  • A university degree or vocational qualification of at least two years.
  • Qualification recognised by the country where it was obtained.
  • German language at least A1 or English language at least B2.
  • Minimum six points under the points system.
  • Sufficient financial resources and health insurance.
Important: The two routes have different qualification and language rules. First identify which route applies to you instead of assuming that every applicant must score six points.
Eligibility criteria

Basic Eligibility Conditions

Check these key conditions before preparing your application.

Educational Qualification

For the points route, you must have completed a university degree or vocational training lasting at least two years and recognised by the country where you obtained it. The skilled-worker route requires full recognition in Germany.

Language Requirements

For the points route, you need German at A1 level or English at B2 level. Recognised skilled professionals do not need to prove language skills as a formal condition of this route.

Financial Resources

You must show that you can cover your living expenses during your stay. The 2026 benchmark is at least €1,091 net per month. Accepted proof may include a blocked account or a formal Declaration of Commitment.

Health Insurance

You need valid health insurance covering your stay in Germany. Check that the policy meets the requirements for the visa period and your individual circumstances.
