About the visa

What is the Germany Opportunity Card?

The Germany Opportunity Card, known as the Chancenkarte, is a residence title under Section 20a of Germany's Residence Act. It allows eligible applicants from outside the EU and EFTA to enter Germany to look for qualified employment or a suitable qualification measure for recognition of their professional qualifications.

Important: The Opportunity Card is not a job guarantee or a permanent work permit. It gives eligible applicants a limited period to search for suitable work. Once you secure qualified employment, you generally need to apply for the appropriate residence permit before taking up that job.
⌕

Search for qualified employment

Travel to Germany under the eligible route and meet potential employers, attend interviews and look for a suitable qualified position.

✓

Explore recognition measures

If your foreign qualification is only partially recognised or requires additional steps, the card may help you search for a suitable recognition or qualification measure.

Eligibility

Two ways to qualify for the Opportunity Card

Applicants can qualify either as skilled workers with a qualification recognised in Germany or through the points-based route. Both routes require proof of sufficient financial resources.

01

Route 1: Recognised skilled worker

This route may apply if you hold a foreign academic degree or vocational qualification that is fully recognised as equivalent in Germany, or a relevant qualification obtained in Germany.

  • Your academic or vocational qualification meets the applicable German recognition requirements.
  • You do not need to collect six points under the points system.
  • You do not need to prove the language levels required specifically for the points route.
  • You must still demonstrate sufficient financial resources and meet the other visa conditions.
German language ability is strongly recommended for job searching and workplace communication, even where it is not a formal requirement for this route.
02

Route 2: Points-based route

If your qualification is not fully recognised in Germany, you may qualify through the points system if you meet the basic requirements and score at least six points.

  • Have a degree or vocational qualification recognised by the country where it was obtained.
  • Non-academic vocational training must generally have lasted at least two years.
  • Meet the language threshold: German A1 or English B2 (CEFR).
  • Score at least six points under the official points criteria.
  • Show sufficient funds for your stay in Germany.
A points score alone is not enough. The qualification, language and financial conditions must also be satisfied.

Germany Opportunity Card: How the 6-point system works

The points system applies to applicants using Route 2. Points may be awarded for qualification recognition, work experience, language ability, age, previous residence in Germany and a qualifying joint application with a partner.

Financial requirements

Germany Opportunity Card: Funds required in 2026

Applicants must show that they can support themselves financially while searching for employment in Germany. The official 2026 benchmark is at least €1,091 net per month.

€

2026 monthly benchmark

€1,091

Use this monthly figure to estimate the funds required for your intended stay. The total amount depends on the period being funded and the proof method accepted for your application.

▣

Ways to prove financial support

  • Blocked account with the required amount available for the stay.
  • Formal Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) from an eligible person in Germany.
  • In some cases, an eligible part-time employment contract may contribute to proof of funds.
Illustrative example: At €1,091 per month, 12 months would equal €13,092. This is a simple calculation, not a guarantee that every applicant must use a 12-month blocked account. The acceptable funding method and period depend on your application and the competent German mission.

Visa fees, service-provider charges, travel costs, accommodation, insurance and document-related expenses are separate. Confirm the current fee and exact financial evidence requirements with the German mission responsible for your place of residence.

During your stay

What can you do with the Opportunity Card?

The card is intended to support your job search while allowing limited work activity under the applicable rules.

◷

Part-time employment

You may work part-time for up to 20 hours per week while holding the Opportunity Card, subject to the applicable conditions.

✓

Trial employment

You may undertake trial employment for up to two weeks per employer to demonstrate your skills and assess whether the role is suitable, within the permitted rules.

Remember: Part-time or trial work under the Opportunity Card does not automatically authorise you to start an unrestricted full-time qualified job. If you receive a suitable offer, check the correct residence permit and approval process before starting the new role.

Career preparation

Prepare for your job search in Germany

The Opportunity Card gives you time to search, but success depends on your skills, qualifications, language ability, professional experience and demand in your field.

Research sectors and roles

Germany has skilled-worker opportunities across a range of sectors, including:

  • Information technology and software
  • Engineering and technical occupations
  • Healthcare and medical professions
  • Transport and logistics
  • Construction and skilled trades
  • Education, hospitality and green jobs

Get application-ready

  • Prepare a clear CV in a format suitable for German employers.
  • Research employers and vacancies before travelling.
  • Check whether your profession is regulated and needs recognition or a licence.
  • Improve your German language skills.
  • Prepare qualification documents and employment references.
  • Apply for roles that match your qualifications and experience.
After finding employment

What happens after you receive a job offer?

If you find qualified employment during your Opportunity Card stay, you will generally need to apply to the local foreigners authority for the appropriate residence title before moving into that employment.

Qualified job offer

Check that the role meets the relevant requirements for the residence permit you intend to apply for. Your employer and the competent authority may need to provide or review additional information.

Change of residence status

Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for a residence permit for qualified professionals or another suitable employment route. Do not assume the Opportunity Card itself authorises unrestricted full-time employment.

Frequently asked questions

Germany Opportunity Card FAQs

Answers to common questions from Indian applicants exploring the Chancenkarte route.

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is Germany's current residence route under Section 20a of the Residence Act for eligible people seeking qualified employment or a qualification measure. It is commonly discussed as Germany's job-search visa, but it has specific eligibility conditions.
Indian nationals may apply if they meet the applicable requirements. They must qualify through the recognised skilled-worker route or satisfy the qualification, language and six-point conditions of the points-based route, as well as the financial and other requirements.
No. The Opportunity Card is designed for eligible applicants who do not yet have a qualified job offer and want to search for employment in Germany. If you already have a suitable job offer, another employment visa route may be more appropriate.
Applicants using the points-based route need at least six points. They must also meet the basic qualification requirement, German A1 or English B2 language threshold, and financial requirements.
No. Applicants whose foreign academic or vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany, or who hold a qualifying German qualification, may apply through the skilled-worker route without collecting six points.
The published 2026 benchmark is at least €1,091 net per month. Financial proof may be provided through an accepted blocked account, a formal Declaration of Commitment or, in eligible cases, a qualifying part-time employment contract. Confirm the required amount and proof method for your application.
The initial job-search Opportunity Card can be issued for up to one year. The actual validity is determined by the competent authority and the circumstances of the application.
The Opportunity Card permits part-time employment for up to 20 hours per week and trial employment of up to two weeks per employer under the applicable conditions. It does not automatically permit unrestricted full-time qualified employment.
For the points-based route, you need German at least A1 or English at least B2. The recognised skilled-worker route does not require the points-route language proof. However, German language skills can be very helpful when applying for jobs and communicating at work.
No. It provides an opportunity to search for qualified employment in Germany. Finding a job depends on your qualifications, experience, language ability, occupation, employer requirements and labour-market conditions.
An extension is not automatic. If you find qualified employment or a suitable qualification measure, you may be able to obtain an appropriate follow-up residence title or an Opportunity Card extension in certain circumstances. The local foreigners authority assesses the case.
Start with the official Consular Services Portal and the Opportunity Card instructions published by the German Missions in India. Follow the personalised document list and appointment instructions shown for your application.
